What is a Godly Mother?

May 12, 2025 by thebiblicallymindedfamily Leave a Comment

What is a godly mother? Elizabeth George’s statement is bold and beautiful. “A godly mother is one who loves the Lord her God with all her heart, soul, mind and strength, and then passionately, consistently, and unrelentingly teacher her child to do the same.”

1. Passionately

Moms should have a deep love for the Lord which is actively seen in her life and teaching. This is not a passive activity, though. She uses her words and actions to demonstrate to her children a never-ending devotion to her God and His Word. Moms who have a passion for God and His Word will teach the Scriptures to her children each day with excitement and intentionality. She will hang verses around her home, and she will memorize verses with her kids. She will keep the Scriptures in front of her children by exposing them to Christian books (see booklists here), Christian songs, and hymns. Being a Christian isn’t a part of her life, it is her whole life!

2. Consistently

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 says it plainly:

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”

Teaching your children to love the Lord is a consistent job for a mom. As she goes about her everyday tasks in life, she is teaching about the Lord and asking her children to join her in learning new Bible verses. This does not come naturally to many moms, but it doesn’t have to be awkward.

For example, as you are on a walk with your children, point out the beautiful clouds that you see. Talk about the name of big puffy white clouds, and then ask them where they came from. Some astute kids will tell you about the scientific formation of them. But Godly mothers will use this opportunity to point their children to the Creator and His beauty, majesty, and wisdom, using verses like Psalm 19:1. “The Heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.” As you go throughout your day, talk about Jesus, pray with your children, and lead them in memorizing Scripture.

3. Unrelentingly

We need to be mothers who love the Lord and that love flows out from every part of our being. It is not only taught but caught. Children will see our actions and follow what we do. They will hear our convictions and see them played out in our daily lives. We can’t fake a relationship with the Lord in front of our children. They will see through that and make decisions about their own walk with Jesus based on what they have seen from their moms.

When I think of “unrelentingly”, I visualize how Jesus as the Good Shepherd would leave the 99 sheep to find the one (Matthew 18). He may look for hours until He finally has the little lamb safely back in His arms. That same passion and pursuit is what we need as parents. We don’t save the spiritual teaching for Sundays or relinquish that responsibility to the church. It is a daily grind that makes every hour count. It reminds our children regularly that our whole lives are nothing apart from God…. without Him we are nothing. John 15:5 says it like this, “Apart from Me, you can do nothing.”

I pray that you and I will be godly mothers like this…Mothers with the goal to love the Lord will all her heart, soul, mind, and strength, and desires to pass that love on to her children in a legacy of faith. May we be mothers who turn the world around by raising God-fearing warriors for Him!

Tell us in the comments what activities that you have implemented in your home to teach your children.
