The Wordless Book: Sharing the Gospel with Kids

March 4, 2026 by thebiblicallymindedfamily 1 Comment

When my children were quite young, I introduced them to colors. What color is this? What color is that? It was a fun game to play with them as we were in the car or in the store. It kept them engaged. One day though, I told my girls that I was going to read them the color story. They snuggled in close and were fascinated because it was a book with colors — but it did not include some of their favorites like pink or purple. They were also confused because this book also had no words on the pages. This new “Wordless Book” of colors caught their attention as I shared with them the story of Salvation. The Wordless Book was a fabulous way of sharing the Gospel with kids. Of course, they were very interested and had lots of questions for me, but it quickly became a favorite way of sharing Jesus with children at home and church.

In the sections that follow, I show you how to use the Wordless Book to show the plan of salvation. I have labeled each page of the book with its color and outlined what each color means and have included some of the Scriptures that you could use for each section. *Please note that there are many other verses that would be great for each color. I pray it is a helpful way for you to evangelize.

Black/Dark

All of us were born sinners. We all do and say and think things that are against what God and His Word tell us to do. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” This is sad news because our sinful, dirty hearts keep us from being with God and Jesus who love us very much. Romans 6:23 gives us this bad news: “For the wages of sin is death…” Our sin has earned us death. One lie, one act of disobedience, one bad attitude, one time cheating on a test, one naughty word… just one of those things keep us from God. We are dark in our sin and God who is without sin (we call that holy) cannot be with us.

We are all sinners... dark in our sin.

Red

The RED represents the blood of Jesus. The Bible says, “Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins.” (Hebrews 9:22) Because God loves us so much, He made a way for us to be forgiven of our sin with His blood. In the Old Testament, the priests would sacrifice a lamb to cover the sins of the people. He would have to do this over and over again to cover the sins of the people. But in the New Testament, Jesus came and was the one-time sacrifice that we needed. His blood covers sin in the past and in the present and into the future. First John 1:7b says, “the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.”

Jesus' blood (red) is what pays the penalty for our sin.

White

When you understand that Jesus died for your sin, you can ask Him to forgive you and clean your sins away. You will then be white or clean as snow. Jesus will take the dark/blackness/dirtiness of your sin and wash it all away. What is left is the new clean you! First John 1:9 puts it this way: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” If we ask, He WILL forgive us each and every time. He turns our dirty hearts into clean ones.

Jesus' blood washes us white as snow.

Gold

By choosing to follow Jesus, you will now have eternal life with Jesus. He told His disciples that He is going to prepare a place for them in Heaven. John 14:2 tell us that. “In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.” In other places the Bible tells us that Heaven has streets of gold (Revelation 21:21), gates of gems, and has the light of Jesus. It will be a beautiful place. But in order to go there, we must believe that Jesus died for our sin, ask Him to forgive us, confess with our mouths that He is our Lord, and repent (turn away) from our sin to follow Him.

After we accept the free gift of salvation and repent of our sins, we receive eternal life in Heaven with God.

Green

After you accept Jesus as your Savior, you should grow in your faith by choosing to obey what God has commanded. Just like a tree or a plant grows green which shows us it is healthy, we grow healthy spiritually in a few ways. We must obey what the Bible says. Reading the Bible, telling others about it, and attending church are other good things to be doing. We also need to trust Jesus and His promises to us without trying to make it to God on our own good deeds. “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and forever! Amen.” (2 Peter 3:18)

God wants us to grow (like a plant grows green) in our knowledge of Him and the Bible, in our obedience, and our faith.

Blue

Blue reminds us of water. One of the ways that we can be obedient to Jesus’ commands is to be baptized in water. Baptism tells all the people around you that you are a Jesus’ follower and desire to live for Him! In Matthew 28:19 Jesus commands us, “Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” We are to be baptized and baptize others to be a demonstration of what Jesus has done for us!

One of the ways we can obey is to be baptized to show the world that we identify with Jesus and He is the Lord of our lives.

In Conclusion

These six colors (or just five if you don’t have blue for baptism) make an easy way for you to share the Gospel with others. You can have these colors as a homemade booklet (as I did above), as beads on a necklace or bracelet (like the picture below), or as something else like candies. The important part is that you know what they mean and can use Scripture to teach the truth of Salvation to children or adults.
