Throughout the year our home is filled with music — kids and parents alike singing and playing music. We mostly enjoy various kinds of Christian music, and we even choose to start our homeschool day with hymns of the faith. (Read more in THIS article.) As Good Friday and Easter approach, our music shifts to become more reflective on the death and resurrection of Jesus because this season is the foundation of our faith! In this article I have listed nine hymns which have been central to this holiday in churches and homes. Let these sounds of Good Friday and Easter be the anthem which is heard throughout your home during this season.
I pray that they will be a blessing to your family as you introduce them, sing them, and memorize them. Start by listening to them together in your vehicle, then print out the words for each reader in your home (I have included a free printable), sing them together during family devotions, listen to them on YouTube, and enjoy the rich godly heritage of faith you are creating! By intentionally incorporating these into your holiday routine, you will help your whole family focus on Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection for a more meaningful season.

Some of our favorites:
1. Jesus Paid it All
2. O Sacred Head, Now Wounded
3. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
4. Christ the Lord is Risen Today
5. Because He Lives

6. Christ Arose
7. He is Lord
8. I Serve a Risen Savior
9. Nothing But the Blood of Jesus

Why should we use hymns in our homes for Good Friday and Easter?
As we come closer to these special holidays in our faith, learning and singing hymns gives us great theology to talk about and memorize. As your children grow, it is important that we impart to them spiritual truths that they will take with them into adulthood. Hymns are a great way to teaching spiritual Truths without having daunting theology lessons. Your children will repeat these rich lyrics over and over as they memorize them and tuck them deep into their hearts. (Learn more about incorporating hymns into your family life HERE.)
